*Bad day for Nigerian male sprinters as Brume, Ashe, Ekev fails in 100m semi-finals*


It was a bad day for Nigerian sprinters at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham yesterday as the country’s three competitors in the 100m – Godson Brume, Favor Ashe and Raymond Ekev – failed to qualify for the final of the event .

In the semifinals, Brume had a disappointing race, finishing in a time of 10.52 seconds and missing out on a final ticket. Ashe didn’t do any better, as his comeback of 10.24 seconds in the second semifinal didn’t get him into the final.Ekev, who also had a race to forget as he finished last in the third and final semi-final.

Things went better for the women as the duo of Grace Nzube Nwokocha, who finished second in the first semi-final with 11.06 seconds, and Rosemary Chukwuma, who finished second in the third semi-final with 11.05 seconds, made it through to the final.

Chinenye Udo Gabriel’s 11.45 seconds was just enough for sixth place in the second semi-final, but not for the final.

The women’s 100m final took place yesterday.

Today is a busy day for the Nigerian team as around 16 of their athletes are expected to be in action. The men’s 400m final was decided at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.

Nathaniel and Abubakar clocked 46.91s and 46:77s respectively, taking second place in their heats to qualify automatically, while Adeyemi qualified as one of the third fastest of all for third-placed runners in the semifinals.

In the women’s 400m, Patience Okon George automatically qualified by finishing fourth in her run, but the duo of Patience Knowledge Omovoh and Ella Onojuvwevwo didn’t make it.
