ISWAP Threatens Kukawa LGA Residents with Death, Sparking Mass Exodus

Just four days after the massacre of fifteen fishermen in Tumbun Rogo, the Islamic State – West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have issued a deadly ultimatum to the residents of Kukawa LGA, demanding they vacate their communities.

A resident, who fled to Maiduguri three hours after receiving the threat, disclosed this to reporters anonymously.

He recounted that early Thursday morning, the terrorists assembled residents from various communities in the local government area, ordering them to leave their homes by Saturday or face death.

In response, many residents began fleeing immediately, with some heading to Kross Kauwa and others seeking refuge in Monguno.

Kukawa LGA, located by Lake Chad, is known for its fishing, farming, and other agricultural activities. Despite the presence of Nigerian Army and Navy troops, the area remains vulnerable to insurgent attacks.

Previously displaced by insurgents, communities like Kross Kauwa, Baga, Doron-Baga, Kukawa, and Tumbun Rogo had been resettled under the administration of Professor Babagana Zulum.

Although relative peace and stability had been restored, Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists continue to target these communities, exploiting their socioeconomic value and the local fishing and farming activities for survival and financial gain.
