Replacement of ESKOM Boss Will Not Stop South Africa’s Blackouts

Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter’s departure is a major blow for South Africa and the state-owned power company for a variety of reasons. It happens at a crucial moment for the utility, which generates 95% of the power utilized in the nation.

 

All three regions have seen some development under De Ruyter’s direction. The successful prosecution of corrupt individuals, the decoupling of Eskom, and the transition of generating units into an integrated, ecologically friendly organization are now all seriously jeopardized. The timing of De Ruyter’s departure coincides with South Africa‘s energy users experiencing the most extreme planned power outages ever. 15 coal-fired power plants, 1 nuclear facility, 4 gas turbines, and 7 pumped storage/hydroelectric stations are all operated by Eskom. There doesn’t appear to be any end in sight to the increased rolling blackouts, and the majority of the coal stations are out of commission for urgent maintenance
